Preparing Your Hvac System for the Summer Heat

Preparing Your Hvac System for the Summer Heat

Preparing Your HVAC System for the Summer Heat

It’s a good time to become a prepper… an AC prepper that is!

Summer’s coming and it means it’s time to prepare your Air Conditioner for the upcoming heat so that your home can remain a comfortable refuge to the scorching heat.

Whether you’re a beginner prepper or more advanced, it’s helpful to have a checklist. Here’s everything you need to be ready:

  • Start by scheduling professional maintenance to get your system in excellent condition.
  • Don’t overlook the importance of changing your air filters regularly; clean filters not only improve air quality but also enhance system efficiency, leading to lower energy bills.
  • Make sure to get professional advice on how your filters need to be changed. A couple living alone has different needs than a family of 5 with multiple pets. Also consider if someone in your home has allergies to determine the best type of filter.
  • Sealing and insulating your ducts can prevent energy loss, so if you’ve not had your ductwork examined it’s a good time to do so.
  • Upgrading to a smart thermostat offers convenience, allowing you to adjust your home’s temperature for the best comfort and savings.
  • Consider investing in an energy-efficient Air Conditioner or Ductless Mini Split for long-term benefits, including reduced energy consumption and environmental support.
  • Finally, optimizing airflow and ventilation can greatly improve your system’s performance.

These steps are just the beginning of maximizing your HVAC system’s efficiency before the summer heat hits, ensuring a cooler, more enjoyable home environment with potential opportunities to save on your energy bills.

Schedule Professional AC Maintenance

Many Air Conditioning malfunctions tend to happen when you need it the most!

Avoid getting caught off guard by scheduling a professional maintenance checkup of your AC system to ensure it’s running efficiently.

Our trained AC Technicians know what to look for to ensure your system is in excellent condition. A professional checkup encompasses a thorough inspection and cleaning of your system’s components. Think of it as preventative maintenance for your Air Conditioner. This allows us to identify small problems before they become big problems.

Change Air Filters Regularly

There’s one thing every homeowner can do to participate in their home comfort. It’s a small investment that delivers big returns in improved efficiency, lower energy costs, and a longer-lasting system.

What is it? Get on a schedule to regularly change your air filters. Speak to one of our experts to find out how often you should change your air filter. We’ll evaluate important factors like how many people are in the home, how many pets and if there is someone in the home with asthma or allergies. All of these will determine what type of filter and how frequently the filter should be changed.

A clean filter is your HVAC system’s best friend because it filters out things like dust, dirt, debris, pet dander, and other airborne particles, which is why they need to be changed regularly.

Without regularly scheduled changes, build up can occur and the filter can get clogged, which puts undue stress on the system, potentially leading to costly repairs or even a premature breakdown.

So, don’t wait until you notice a problem. Get on a schedule. Mark your calendar and make filter changes a regular part of your home maintenance routine. Your summer self will thank you!

Seal and Insulate Ducts

After confirming your air filters are clean, it’s equally vital to seal and insulate your ducts for peak HVAC efficiency. Leaky ducts can greatly impede your system’s performance, causing it to work harder and increase your energy bills. Sealing those leaks is a critical step in preparing for the summer heat. You’re not just preserving cool air but also preventing dust and pollutants from entering your home, which can impact your indoor air quality.

Insulation is the next step. Properly insulated ducts help maintain the temperature of the air flowing through them. This means your HVAC system doesn’t have to overexert itself to cool your home, leading to energy savings and prolonging the life of your system. It’s a smart move, especially in areas of your home that aren’t air-conditioned, like attics or basements, where ducts can lose a significant amount of cool air.

Install a Smart Thermostat

Upgrading to a smart thermostat can greatly enhance your Air Conditioners efficiency and your home’s comfort.  By installing a smart thermostat, you’re not just making an upgrade; you’re taking a significant step towards optimizing your home’s climate control. These innovative devices allow you to adjust your home’s temperature remotely, ensuring you walk into a cool, comfortable environment without wasting energy cooling an empty house.

Don’t let the summer heat catch you unprepared. Installing a smart thermostat is a smart move that pays off in comfort, convenience, and cost savings.

Is it Time to Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Air Conditioner?

It could be. If your system is more than 12 years old, it’s time to consider an upgrade to an energy-efficient AC system. Today’s air conditioners have greater efficiencies that will help to reduce your cooling costs.

Modern energy-efficient systems, such as those offered by Trane and Mitsubishi, are designed to provide superior cooling while consuming less energy. This isn’t just about staying cool; it’s about doing so in the most sustainable and cost-effective way possible. We’re proud to be Boise Idaho’s only Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, which means we’re experts at ductless heating and air conditioning solutions.

Optimize Airflow and Ventilation

Now it’s time to make sure that the air flowing through your home is as cool and fresh as possible. Start by checking your vents and registers. Are they open and unobstructed? Furniture or curtains can block airflow, making your system work harder and less efficiently.

Next, consider your home’s ventilation. Proper ventilation is vital to not only cooling your home but also improving indoor air quality. Make sure exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen are working correctly; these pull hot air out of your house, allowing cooler air to circulate.

Don’t forget about ceiling fans. They don’t lower the temperature, but by creating a breeze, they make the room feel cooler. This can allow you to set your thermostat a bit higher, saving energy while keeping you comfortable.

Optimizing airflow and ventilation is an essential step in preparing for summer.

spring hvac tips

Preparing Your Idaho Home Hvac System for Spring: Essential Maintenance Tips

As spring approaches in Idaho, it’s crucial to ensure your HVAC system is ready to transition from the cold winter months to the milder temperatures ahead.

Proper maintenance not only enhances the efficiency of your system, but can also prolong its lifespan and ensure your home remains comfortable throughout the season.

During winter, your HVAC system works hard to keep your home warm. Now, with warmer days on the horizon, it’s time to shift focus and prepare your system for cooling.

Spring cleaning is not just about tidying up your living spaces; it also involves taking care of the systems that keep your home running smoothly.

Your HVAC system plays a pivotal role in maintaining the air quality and temperature of your home.

Inefficiencies often lead to higher energy costs, so if your system is underperforming or your energy bills have unexpectedly increased, it may be a sign that your HVAC system requires maintenance or repair.

Changing and Upgrading Air Filters

Upgrading your HVAC system’s air filters is critical for maintaining indoor air quality and preventing allergens such as pollen and dust from circulating within your Idaho home.

Selecting Appropriate Filters

When you’re selecting a new air filter, you should consider the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating that fits your needs and the recommendations of your HVAC system’s manufacturer.

  • MERV Ratings: A standard scale that measures the effectiveness of air filters.
    • MERV 1-4: Basic filtration, captures large particles such as dust mites.
    • MERV 5-8: Good for homes, captures mold spores and pet dander.
    • MERV 9-12: Better for homes with allergy sufferers, captures finer particles like pollen.
    • MERV 13-16: Superior filtration, captures bacteria and tobacco smoke.

Select a filter that balances your concern about indoor allergens and your HVAC system’s capabilities. Higher MERV ratings can filter smaller particles, enhancing indoor air quality and helping to reduce allergies.

Installation Instructions

Changing the air filter in your HVAC system is a straightforward process you can complete without professional assistance.

  1. Turn Off Your HVAC System: This is to ensure safety while changing the filter.
  2. Locate the Filter Slot: Check your HVAC system’s manual if you’re uncertain where the filter is housed.
  3. Remove the Old Filter: Slide it out carefully to avoid releasing trapped particles back into the air.
  4. Check the Size: Ensure that the new filter matches the old one’s size, which is usually printed on the frame.
  5. Insert the New Filter: Pay attention to the arrows on the filter’s frame pointing in the direction of the airflow.
  6. Slide the filter into place with the arrows aligned with the flow.

Regular replacement of air filters ensures your HVAC system operates efficiently, keeps the air in your home clean, and reduces potential problems with allergies and dust buildup.

It’s recommended to change your filters every 90 days, or as specified by the manufacturer, to maintain peak indoor air quality.

Breathe Better Boise!  How AccuClean Transforms Indoor Air Quality

Whether you live in Boise or surrounding areas of Nampa and Meridian, breathing clean air isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for good health. With residents spending more time indoors and with outdoor air becoming more toxic with pollutants and smoke, there’s never been a better time to understand and take steps to improve your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) with an AccuClean®  Whole Home Air Cleaning System.

What’s in the air you breathe? From airborne particles to dirt, germs, and bacteria, there are elements that can degrade the air you breathe inside your homes and workplace. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air!

Your awareness of Indoor Air Quality and its impact on your health has never been more important. By delving into the science behind AccuClean’s air purification technology, you will gain insights into why it is essential for Boise residents to invest in a reliable air purification system.

Understanding Indoor Air Quality. Indoor Air Quality, commonly referred to as IAQ, refers to the concentration of pollutants in the air within a building. These pollutants can range from allergens, dust, and bacteria to chemicals and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). While the quality of outdoor air is regulated by governmental bodies, the quality of your indoor air quality is entirely up to you!

What is the Impact on Health? Poor indoor air quality can lead to an array of health problems. Short-term effects may include headaches, dizziness, and fatigue, while the long-term consequences can be as severe as respiratory diseases, heart disease, and even cancer. For individuals who already suffer from respiratory issues, like asthma or allergies, poor IAQ can exacerbate their conditions. Children and elderly residents are particularly susceptible to the health risks posed by poor indoor air quality. Given these significant health impacts, improving indoor air quality in Boise homes and workplaces should be a priority.

AccuClean To The Rescue: Remove up to 99.98% of Airborne Particulates

Your Solution for Clean Indoor Air is easier than you think. If you are a homeowner in Boise or nearby areas like Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Caldwell, and Payette, AccuClean can be your answer to cleaner, healthier air. Unlike standard air filters that only capture larger particles, AccuClean can remove up to 99.98% of airborne particles, as small as 0.1 microns. AccuClean’s technology doesn’t merely trap pollutants; it neutralizes and eradicates them, ensuring that the air you breathe is free from contaminants.

The Science Behind AccuClean’s Air Purification Technology

AccuClean’s advanced air purification technology uses a series of filters and electrically charged fields to capture and neutralize airborne pollutants. The initial pre-filter traps larger particles, like dust and pet dander. Then, the remaining air passes through a charged ion field that attracts microscopic particles and microbes. Finally, the HEPA filter captures these charged particles, ensuring that the air is clean at the molecular level. This multi-stage process makes AccuClean one of the most efficient and reliable air purification systems available today.

Breathe Easy: Benefits of AccuClean for Boise Residents

Installing an AccuClean system comes with an array of benefits for Boise residents. Firstly, it significantly reduces health risks associated with poor indoor air quality. It’s also particularly beneficial for those who suffer from allergies or respiratory issues. Secondly, cleaner air means less dust and fewer odors, making your home more pleasant and inviting. Lastly, AccuClean systems are energy-efficient, thereby reducing your electricity bill and contributing to a greener environment.

• Increased Home Value: Installing a new, efficient air conditioner can boost your property’s value. Potential buyers are often attracted to homes with modern, energy-efficient HVAC systems, which can set your home apart in a competitive real estate market.

What Are The Benefits Of Financing A New HVAC System?

Greater cash availability: With a financed HVAC system, you won’t have any large upfront costs, and you might even be able to install a new AC system without putting any money down. The low upfront costs translate to more cash availability, freeing up homeowners’ cash for other purposes

Should I Finance My New Air Conditioner?

Financing an HVAC installation can be a smart decision under the right conditions. You can take advantage of the loan to purchase equipment with a higher efficiency, and energy savings will help cover the debt over time. HVAC financing works best when you have a low-interest option.

Financing Options for Your New Air Conditioner: Many air conditioning manufacturers and retailers offer financing options to facilitate the purchase of their products. These financing programs may include low or zero-interest rates, flexible payment terms, and quick approval processes. It’s worth exploring these options when considering your new air conditioner.

Personal Loans: Personal loans from banks, credit unions, or online lenders can provide the funds necessary to purchase your air conditioner. These loans typically have fixed interest rates and repayment terms that can be tailored to fit your budget. Compare different loan options to find the most favorable terms and rates.

Home Equity Loans or Lines of Credit: If you own a home, you may be able to tap into your home equity through a loan or line of credit. These loans leverage the value of your home as collateral, often offering competitive interest rates.

Energy-Efficiency Programs and Grants: Some local governments, utility companies, and environmental organizations offer incentives, rebates, or grants for homeowners who invest in energy-efficient appliances. These programs aim to promote sustainability and reduce energy consumption. Peppy Heating and Cooling is well aware of the financing options in our area as well as rebates and incentive that will help offset the cost of your new high efficiency air conditioner.

The Importance of AC Maintenance

The Importance of AC Maintenance for Boise, Nampa, and Treasure Valley Homeowners

Want to know the #1 reason that Air Conditioners fail?

It’s true. It’s the easiest thing a homeowner can do to contribute to their home comfort, and yet scheduling yearly AC maintenance is often overlooked.

With neglect comes the buildup of dirt & debris which causes your Air Conditioner to work even harder.

The downside of forgetting to service your Air Conditioner is that it’s going to cost you…. It’s just a matter of time. When your AC breaks down it will be an inconvenience that will cost you time. And when your AC fails it’s going to cost you money and that expense will happen sooner than if you tended to your AC regularly.

Why is AC Maintenance Important?

So you can stay comfortable of course! You’ll also get peace of mind and be prepared for the hot summer in addition to these amazing benefits:

Increased Efficiency: You want your Air Conditioner to run at peak performance, but over time, air conditioning systems can become clogged with dirt, dust, and other debris. This buildup can restrict airflow and make the system work harder to cool your home, which decreases its efficiency and increases energy costs. Regular maintenance is the easy answer that can prevent this buildup and ensure your system runs at its optimal level.

Extended Lifespan: Everything lasts longer when it’s taken care of, including your Air Conditioner. Neglecting AC maintenance can lead to expensive repairs and premature system failure. Regular maintenance can also help us detect small problems before they turn into big problems.

Improved Indoor Air Quality: A dirty or poorly maintained AC system can circulate pollutants and allergens in your home, which can lead to health problems such as asthma and allergies. Regular maintenance can ensure your system is clean and functioning properly, improving the quality of the air you breathe.

Cost Savings: By ensuring your AC system runs efficiently and preventing potential problems, regular maintenance can save you money on energy bills and expensive repairs.

What Should Homeowners Do to Maintain their AC System?

Schedule a professional AC safety and maintenance tune up before the hot summer months approach. Beat the crowds and get peace of mind by scheduling before the busy season. In the meantime, here are recommendations that will lead to a cool and comfy home this summer.

Change Your Air Filter: Get expert advice from our techs because you’ll want to find a rhythm of how often to change your air filter. For example, a home with a single person or a couple may only need to change the air filter every 6 months, while a family of five with multiple pets may need to do so every couple of months. Dirty air filters are a common cause of AC problems and decreased efficiency so it’s important to stay on top of air filter changes.

Clean the Outdoor Unit: The outdoor unit of your AC system can become clogged with dirt and debris, which can restrict airflow and decrease efficiency. Homeowners should regularly clean the unit with a hose and remove any debris from around it.

Install a Programmable Thermostat: Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to set the temperature to automatically adjust throughout the day, which can save money on energy bills and reduce wear and tear on the system.

Schedule Professional Maintenance: Although homeowners can perform some simple maintenance tasks themselves, it’s a must to have a professional safety and maintenance tune up at least once a year. Professional technicians can identify and prevent potential problems, clean the system thoroughly, and ensure it runs efficiently.

AC Maintenance is easy for BoiseNampa, and the Treasure Valley homeowners. There’s just one thing you need to do once each year. Turn to the professionals at Peppy Heating and Cooling. They’re just a hop, skip and a jump away and ready to help you be prepared this summer.

  • Poor Airflow: If you’re noticing weak airflow from your vents, it could be a sign that your compressor is failing or that there’s a blockage in your ductwork.

  • Strange Noises: If you’re hearing banging, grinding, or squealing noises coming from your AC unit, it could be a sign that there’s a loose or damaged part that needs to be repaired immediately.
  • High Humidity: If your AC isn’t removing humidity from your home, it could be a sign that your unit isn’t working properly or that your ductwork is leaking.
  • Strange Smells: If you’re noticing a musty or burning smell coming from your vents, it could be a sign that there’s mold or a burnt wire in your unit.

If you’re experiencing any of the above signs, it’s important to schedule AC repair immediately. Here are the steps to take when your AC needs repair:

The Ultimate Guide to AC Service: Keep Your Boise Home Cool & Comfy

The ABC’s of AC Service: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your AC Running Smoothly.

The best time to service your Central Air Conditioner is before you have a problem.

Seems obvious, right?  However, neglect is one of the biggest reasons your Air Conditioner stops performing or worse yet stops working at all.

As a homeowner in Boise, Nampa, and the Treasure Valley, keeping your home’s air conditioning system in top working condition is essential to staying comfortable during our hot summer months.

Peppy!  Heating and Cooling By The Numbers

Hoppin’ Good Service is more than a slogan… it’s our commitment to deliver quality home comfort solutions that keep you comfortable all year long. Our HVAC team is second to none and we can back that up with stats like this:

  • 9 Certified Techs

  • American Standard Customer Care Dealer
  • Over 461 Company Google Reviews
  • 100% Satisfaction Guarantee!

Whether you have a Central Air Conditioner or a Ductless Mini Split AC System, regular AC service is crucial to maintaining optimal performance and energy efficiency.

In this article, we’ll cover the ABCs of AC service, from basic maintenance tasks to troubleshooting common problems and more.

There are two simple things every homeowner can do to contribute to their comfort and prevent an unexpected AC breakdown.

Step 1: Change Your Air Filter Regularly: One of the simplest yet most important maintenance tasks you can do for your AC system is to replace the air filter regularly. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and even damage your system over time.

How often should you replace your air filter?  It depends on how many people live in your home, if there are pets in the home, and if someone suffers from allergies or asthma.  Our techs will evaluate your needs so you can do what’s best for your home. Depending on your usage and the type of filter you have, you may need to replace your filter every 3-6 months.

Step 2: Schedule Regular AC Maintenance: At a minimum you should have your Air Conditioner serviced by a professional once a year. A professional safety and maintenance check-up will help you AC run at peak performance, extend the life of your equipment, and give you peace of mind.

Consider the Peppy Comfort Club where we provide insane value and discounts for your HVAC equipment. We’ll keep track of and schedule yearly service for your Air Conditioner and Furnace. And if your equipment breaks down or you have an emergency, you’ll get priority treatment!

If you’re noticing that you’re not as comfortable as you used to be, or if your monthly energy bill is increasing, it’s important to schedule AC service as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure that your system is running at peak efficiency.

Common AC Problems:  Even with regular maintenance, AC systems can develop problems from time to time. Some of the most common issues include refrigerant leaks, frozen evaporator coils, clogged drain lines, and malfunctioning thermostats.

Understanding Energy Efficiency:  Energy efficiencies have improved dramatically over the years. One of the main benefits of regular AC service is improved energy efficiency, which can save you money on your utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint. If your AC system is more than 12 years old, it might be time to consider upgrading to a high efficiency and ENERGY STAR® rated air conditioner.

In addition to basic maintenance tasks, there are other steps you can take to maximize energy efficiency, such as upgrading to a programmable thermostat, sealing air leaks in your home, and investing in a high-efficiency AC system.

Air Conditioning Refrigerant: Freon, or refrigerant, is the substance that cools and dehumidifies the air in your AC system. If your system is low on Freon, it may not cool effectively or could even suffer damage. If you suspect a Freon leak, it’s important to schedule AC service right away to prevent further problems.

Green Options: If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of your AC system, there are several green options to consider. These include high-efficiency systems, Ductless Mini-Split Systems, and the option to use solar to power the AC system. Solar and Ductless are powerful solutions for many homeowners.

Humidity Control: In addition to cooling your home, your AC system also plays a key role in controlling indoor humidity levels. If your home feels too humid despite running your AC, there may be an issue with your system’s dehumidifier. Our trained and certified HVAC techs will advise on and diagnose and repair the problem to keep your home comfortable and healthy.

Converting Your Attic, Basement or Garage: Many homeowners are converting their garage into livable space. The most important thing to know is that you don’t want to add additional load to your Central Air Conditioner.

A better solution is to add a Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner to the new space, this will give you the benefit of heating and cooling the new space without disrupting the comfort for the rest of the house.

Another benefit of Ductless Air Conditioning is that you can use it to solve hot spots throughout your home. It’s become popular to install Ductless AC in Master Bedrooms or on the 2nd level of homes that may be hard to keep cool.

Stay a Step Ahead of The AC Season!  Scheduling AC Maintenance for your Boise and Nampa home now, can keep you cool and comfy all summer long.

Alex Duda showed up on time the next morning, gave me 4 options for the repairs needed, and set me up on a twice a year maintenance. The team at Peppy Heating and Cooling have gone above and beyond to help us choose and then install three mini-split units in our Boise County Yurt. We knew it was an odd request and it was over an hour outside of the Treasure Valley - they showed up on time, discussed the layout, installed it in one day (team didn't leave until 8:00 pm) and then cleaned up. They also came back later to help set up the wifi connection and walk us through the operational details. We liked their work so much that we've asked them to take a look at a project in Boise City too.

I just spent the last two days with the Peppy Crew (Kevin, Luke, Josh, and Connor) as they tore all of the old, 1974 ductwork out of my attic and replaced it along with a new Trane furnace and outdoor AC unit. Great guys! Very courteous, knowledgeable, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure everything would function smoothly after they left. Luke is still determined to find access to the duct that hasn't blown in the 20 years I've lived in my house, so more to come. Kevin knows his stuff and was super patient with me and all of my questions. Josh worked tirelessly in that nasty attic, like he was enjoying himself. Connor did a great job working in the rain to finish the AC and was a joy to have in my home. And, of course, Rob, who encouraged me to take the leap with a full update, but with no pressure. He was also very patient with me as I asked questions that ultimately brought me to my decision. I feel like I'm in a new house with all new clean ducts and equipment. Not to mention, I got a new chair....but, that's between me and Peppy. :-). Thank you all!
