Is It Normal for My AC to Run All Day in the Summer?

Boise summers aren’t shy. By mid-afternoon, your air conditioner might be running non-stop and you’re left wondering if that’s normal, or if your system is struggling.

The short answer? In certain conditions, it’s completely normal for your AC to run for long stretches – or even all day. But if your home still isn’t staying cool or your energy bill is climbing faster than the temperature, it’s time to take a closer look.

What’s Normal When It’s 100 Degrees Outside?

When it’s pushing 100 degrees out, your AC has its work cut out for it. Even well-maintained systems might struggle to keep things cool, but they should still keep your space comfortable.

If you crank the thermostat way up (or off) while you’re out and expect it to cool down quickly when you return, don’t be surprised if it takes a while. After a full day of blazing heat, your system’s basically playing catch-up.

The better move? Set it and forget it. Keeping your thermostat at a steady 72-75 lets your AC stay ahead of the heat instead of trying to undo hours of it.

Should You Leave the AC On All Day?

Yes. In fact, leaving your AC on all day is often more efficient than turning it off and back on multiple times.

Air conditioners aren’t built to cool your home instantly. When you shut it off during the hottest hours and restart it later, your system has to work even harder to bring temperatures down, especially if heat has built up in your walls and furniture.

Letting your AC run steadily – especially during peak hours – is typically better than cycling it off and on frequently. Contrary to popular belief, ACs don’t “need to rest.” They’re built to run as needed and can do so safely for hours at a time, provided they’re properly maintained.

Is 72 Degrees Too Cold in the Summer?

It depends on your home and your expectations. Setting your thermostat to 72 or lower might feel great, but it will cause your AC to run nearly non-stop on a hot day, and that can show up fast on your utility bill. We recommend setting your thermostat between 75 and 78 to balance comfort and efficiency.

If your system can’t reach your set temperature at all, especially if it runs all day and still leaves you feeling warm, that’s a sign something could be wrong.

When Long Runtimes Signal a Problem

An AC that runs constantly during a heatwave is one thing. But if it’s happening during milder weather – or your house never quite cools off – your system may be struggling.

Watch for these signs:

  • Uneven cooling between rooms
  • Weak airflow from vents
  • Ice on the refrigerant line or outdoor unit
  • Higher-than-usual energy bills
  • AC clicks on, but doesn’t seem to actually cool

In these cases, the issue could be dirty coils, low refrigerant, clogged filters, or an aging system that’s losing efficiency. Your AC might look like it’s working, but it’s not keeping up.

How to Help Your AC Run Smarter, Not Harder

If your AC is constantly running, don’t panic – but take steps to ease its workload:

  • Close blinds and curtains during peak sun hours
  • Replace your air filter every 1-3 months
  • Use ceiling fans to distribute cool air
  • Seal any air leaks around windows and doors
  • Schedule routine maintenance to catch small issues early
  • Consider adding a ductless mini-split to help cool upstairs or hard-to-reach spaces

Even small improvements can make a big difference in how often your system cycles and how much you spend to stay comfortable. Ductless mini-splits are especially helpful for bonus rooms, second floors, or additions that your main system struggles to reach.
